Registration for the conference has always been open up to the day of the Conference. The deadline was for Meals and Lodging. Bennington College has graciously extended that deadline until June 11 so you still have an opportunity to take advanage of the three nights, six meals $150 package or the lunch/brunch package of $30. The banquet including wine for $35 will also still be available until June 11th. Stop procrastinating.

Panels

These are the members of the first panel and some of what their remarks will address

Sherlock Holmes in the World

Sherry Rose-Bond has been a life-long Sherlockian and among the Sherlockian societies of which she is a member are The Clients of Sherlock Holmes (which she founded with her Sherlockian husband, Scott, more than a quarter century ago) and the Mini-Tonga Society. She has been an invested member of the Adventuresses of Sherlock Holmes (where she is known as "Grace Dunbar") for over 30 years and of the Baker Street Irregulars ("Violet Hunter") for almost 20 years. In 2008, the BSI presented her with the coveted Two Shilling Award for her extraordinary service to the Society. She co-authored a column on Sherlockian issues for "The Armchair Magazine" for over ten years, has both written and spoken extensively on a wide variety of Sherlockian topics, has taught numerous courses on Holmes, and has organized and led several Sherlock Holmes tours to Europe. In real life (as she knows it), Sherry is an educator and a nationally-recognized expert on educational tests and measurement.

"The Conference is focused on The Worlds of Sherlock Holmes, but I'd like for us to turn that around and look at how Sherlock Holmes has invaded OUR world. He is a universally recognized cultural icon who appears in a wide variety of manifestations around the world. Holmes provides a common ground for people of all ages, types, interests, backgrounds, languages, and geography. We will examine the symbolic Holmes and look at examples of how this universal symbol in our world serves as an invitation for us to explore his world."

Michael Atkinson, PhD,is a Professor Emeritus of English and Comparative Literature, recently retired from the University of Cincinnati, where he won teaching awards at the departmental, college, and university level. His book The Secret Marriage of Sherlock Holmes (and Other Eccentric Readings) won the coveted Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America. His particular interest is in the intellectual, cultural, and psychological contexts of literature.

"Sherlock Holmes appeared at a time when both the worlds of both religion and of reason were found to be on quite shaky ground. His carefully constructed imaginative empiricism allowed him to access the appeal of both religion and reason, without really being ither one – a double game which sustains his allure in today's intellectual landscape as well.

Rich Nethercott joined the Baker Street Breakfast club in 1994 after attending the Bennington conference. He co-authored, along with his brother Michael, a prize-winning Sherlockian pastiche for a contest sponsored by the Bennington Chamber of Commerce (Michael, by the way, went on to win the 2009 Black Orchid Novella Award).Rich was a founding editor, along with Steve Seitz, of Groans, Cries & Bleatings – the official newsletter of the Baker Street Breakfast Club. When Rich took a great hiatus from the group, the newsletter continued under Steve’s editorship and lives on today in the capable hands of Sally Sugarman. Rich likes to consider himself a Shercraftian – he is a devotee of both the Sherlock Holmes stories and the writings of author H.P. Lovecraft. He has written numerous articles for the newsletter exploring the relationship between the horror genre and the Holmesian universe.
